Happy Thanksgiving!

We went up to see Ezra today to wish him a Happy First Thanksgiving.  Every year we have so much to be thankful for but this year we have even more. So much more that we can't even begin to say them all.  We are so thankful, overwhelmed, and overjoyed that God has trusted us as parents for Mikayla, Malachi, and Ezra. We are so grateful that when every doctor, nurse, social worker, etc comes in and asks us with concerned looks what our support system is like we can look at each other confidently and say how blessed and fortunate we are to have each other, parents, family, friends, co-workers, and people we don't even know who have poured out so much support in many ways, some of them being  to help with physical support, childcare, meals, emotional support, encouragement, and, most of all, powerful prayers, in which the medical teams response is always a sigh of relief reinforcing how much we are going to need it.  We are also so thankful that we live here where there is a fantastic children's hospital with superb medical and hospital staff willing to use their knowledge and skills to give Ezra the best shot of survival. So even though many people have expressed their condolences to us for having to go through this we tend to respond with thanksgiving and gratitude in our hearts because as painful, stressful, and hard as it is, especially today, we wouldn't want it any other way and rejoice that Ezra has been able to be with us this long and we have two other children at home waiting for us to play with them.  We have been given so many gifts through this, a couple of them being having our faith strengthened and seeing how good, special, and caring people are even when the news is scattered with stories of hatred, anger, and bitterness. We want to wish you all a very, very Happy Thanksgiving and thank you so much for going on this journey with us.

This morning Ezra was stable making very small baby steps that we will gladly take. His oxygen requirements were down but his ventilation support to decrease his carbon dioxide level is still too high to change him over to a conventional ventilator and then oscillator is overall more gentle on his lungs as they hopefully grow. His blood pressure is requiring less medication and his heart rate isn't quite as high. They are still using the same dialysis and thankfully he is slowly starting to have some small meconium stool come out. This afternoon they moved him to a private room and he struggled a little bit with his oxygenation until they got some mucus plugs out. They took another chest X-ray to make sure nothing else happened and it thankfully still looked okay.  They have since been able to start weaning down the oscillator again. We have an excellent night nurse and a day shift nurse that have taken him under their wing the days when they work and for that we appreciate so much because it makes it a lot easier to leave him.

With love,
Jeff & Nicole
